![]() ![]() This is especially frustrating considering how much I’m usually impacted by the very niche subgenre of ‘emotional animal stories’. There are certainly some poignant moments throughout this that were loaded with thematic potential, but sadly it failed to resonate in the way I hoped. ![]() The book also purports to explore the friendship between man and dog, but without giving away any spoilers, I thought the dynamic between Scraggly and her owner was too fraught and slight to make this claim, or for the ending to feel earned. ![]() After all, within this kind of context, I can deal with fictional animals being able to narrate their inner thoughts and feelings, but full-blown inter-species conversations and dogs “bursting into tears” requires greater suspension of disbelief than I can muster. This emotionally manipulative approach coupled with the animal characters being personified a little too much stopped me from being able to submit myself to the narrative. The setup alone threatens to be twee, but I also found it too relentless in its sorrow for Scraggly’s suffering to really hit home. I can see why lots of people love this, as it’s easy to sympathise with a scrappy runt determined to overcome the odds, but it’s presented in a style that I struggled to click with, unfortunately. from the Korean by Chi-Young Kimįollowing a dog named Scraggly and the various hardships she must endure in her attempt to live a happy life, this reads very much like a fable about perseverance in the face of difficult times. ![]() She was tall, full-bosomed and large-limbed, with compact shoulders. The woman shivered with a twitch of her magnificent shoulders, and then cursed. Clumps of undergrowth limited the vision that quested under the somber twilight of the lofty arches formed by intertwining branches. Giant trees hemmed in the small pool where her horse had just drunk. She made the reins fast to the fork of a sapling, and turned about, hands on her hips, to survey her surroundings. The woman drew a booted foot out of the silver stirrup and swung down from the gilt-worked saddle. It stood with its legs wide-braced, its head drooping, as if it found even the weight of the gold-tasseled, red-leather bridle too heavy. The woman on the horse reined in her weary steed. ![]() Manufactured in the United States of America Start Publishing is a registered trademark of Start Publishing LLC HowardĪll rights reserved, including the right to reproduce this book or portions thereof in any form whatsoever.įirst Start Publishing eBook edition July 2015 Start Publishing Presents: Red Nails Robert E. ![]() ![]() ![]() Desperate to get out of the manor as quickly as possible, Myra turns to the governor's older son for help completing the painting before the secret she spent her life concealing makes her the killer's next victim. He was extremely fortunate to have been adopted into a loving home but the traces of abuse still linger in him years later. Rev’s parents stood out to me even more upon this reread. She’s a teenager, going through a lot, does not have a stable home life, is already facing sexism from a young age and is being cyber bullied. She’s prickly, angry, the testament of ‘hurt people hurt people’ applies to her quite aptly.
